I am Himmat’s elder brother, Onkar Singh Marwah (Lefroy 1950-52)…. I am deeply touched and sincerely thankful to all Himmat’s friends and well-wishers who have written so feelingly and affectionately about him at his unfortunate demise on 18-05-2012.
Himmat (Raju to his family) was my ‘baby’ brother – I had coddled him as a babe-in-arms – he grew big and strong and hulking – now I must perform the sad and terrible duty of immersing his ashes in the holy Ganga (due to visa delays his son could not return from the USA in time for the Chautha). No heavier burden have I been called upon to bear…
Himmat had been unwell for some years, bore his illness and failing health bravely and stoically…we did all that was humanly possible and medically available…but God moves in mysterious ways….
We have been enlivened and warmed by the many reminiscences of his friends and colleagues. He was a lucky person to have had so many good friends!
On behalf of all the remaining Marwahs I convey our sincere and humble gratitude to all who have sent their condolences on Himmat’s passing away.
In sincerety and humility,
Onkar Marwah

Himmat Marwah (Raju) was an old and dear friend. His bed was next to mine in Lefroy 6th Form dorm. We shared a study in the school hospital during study leave for the SCs. We trained for the ‘Super Heavy Weight’ for inter house boxing. Got scrapped as we were the only two super heavy weights in school. Would have been an unfair advantage to Lefroy house. Were relieved as we did’nt have to bash up each other. Memories !!! Met him in Dec 2011 at his house for a Lefroy House ‘do’. Went to meet him on 10 Feb 2012 while he was in the ICU in hospital in Gurgaon. Knew he was not going to be with us long. Spoke to his brother Onkar Singh (Lefroy) this morning. My heartfelt condolences to Onkar, his sister Mala, his wife and children. Gaube please convey my condolences to your sister. RIP my friend.

Even though I did not know him at a personal level, the passing of an OC is always a sad event and on behalf of the OCA(India) I extend our deepest sympathies to his family. If someone could write a short obituary on him, it would be appreciated.

Not having known Himmat personally,I whole heartedly endorse the comment of friend B.M.Singh. He is a big loss to the Brotherhood. My condolences to the bereaved members of his family,in particular to his forlorn fatherly brother,Mr.O.S.Marwah who,I recall now, must have been the one who issued my appointment letter to the I.A.S. in July, 1965 in his capacity then as Under Secretary to the Govt.of India. If this much is correct,it is also possible that, like myself,he began his schooling at Col.Brown’s in Dehra Dun,before moving on to BCS. Being four years junior at that stage is like being a twerp to a colossus.Remember him as a prominent Sportsman.Missed him narrowly at BCS : he left in December ’52 and I joined in March ’53. Look forward Sir to meeting you in Delhi sometime and condoling personally.Meanwhile,my prayers and good wishes for you all afflicted ones in the family.God bless the one now gone as well as those left behind to mourn.

My heart is filled with sorrow at the untimely passing away of Himmat Marwah, whom I clearly remember from my school days. He was a highly intelligent individual apart from being an outstanding sportsman. I do not know whether there is a life beyond this.
“Hikayat-e-hasti sunee to darmiyaan se sunee
Na ibtida ki khabar hai na intahaa maloom”.
(What I have heard of the story of life is only about the middle
I know not its beginning; I know not its end).
What we do know, however, is that life can be meaningful if our priorities are largely, accurate. Also, the world is a beautiful place to live in if man has the ability to partake of nature’s innocent perfection. And in the understanding of finality, the interchangeability and the absurdity of situations.
Himmat was a large-hearted and generous individual. He was careful of another’s sensitivities. Also he was aristocratic in the natural reflex. He has gone far too early. Nonetheless, he has left behind the memory of how a good individual can interact with his fellow-beings.
My heart grieves at the memory of my departed friend, who just the other day, was sitting with me in my house in Delhi and sharing the wonderful experiences of his life. I pray for peace to the departed soul and express my heart-felt condolences to his family and the many many friends, he has left behind.
Yours,
in Grief,
